I checked out the G1 phone today and compared it to the iPhone today. I've been leaning heavily towards the iPhone and after checking out the G1, I'm still leaning towards it.
I love the iPhone's touch screen but hate the fact that its a closed plaform. I'm reliant on the Apple iTunes to purchase and install applications. In addition, changing service providers and going to AT&T will be a pain - I have multiple lines and will not want an iPhone for each line.
I love the G1's open platform but am not a big fan of the hardware. The hardware is ok, has multiple interfaces (touch screen, a teenie mouse - ala Blackberry, and a QWERTY keyboard). A big minus is that it is missing a 2.5mm headphone jack. There is a 'converter' that's available which can be used to plug in headphones but that requires an another converter to make it a 3.5mm jack for standard headphones (I have a pair of Bose noisecancelling headphones).
The cost of the service is about the same for AT&T vs. T-Mobile and being locked into a contract with either provider just does not appeal to me.
Bottom line, neither platform is 'perfect'. They both have positives and negatives and just comes down to a matter of personal preference. I like the iPhone hardware because I like the touch screen interface and am willing to live with buying apps from Apple for the iPhone. I am not a big fan of thumb typing and will most likely will not be using the touchscreen keyboard on the iPhone or the QWERTY keyboard on the G1. If Apple sold an unlocked version of the iPhone - that would be a lot closer to an ideal solution.
